On construction sites and in other high-risk workplaces, failing to notice hazards is a common factor in serious injuries and deaths. Yet the usual safety training, lectures in a classroom, rarely holds workers' interest and does not reduce accidents.

What they work on
- Develop computer vision AI algorithms that detect workplace hazards in photographs that trainees take on their own construction sites.
- Create an adaptable pool of accident scenarios and overlay augmented reality avatars accurately onto detected real-world hazards to simulate potential accidents.
- Design learner-centered AR safety training, based on how adults learn, in which trainees organize their own training content.
- Compare hazard recognition and on-site behavior near hazards among workers trained with personalized AR, conventional methods, non-personalized AR and virtual reality.
More about the research
Adults tend to learn best in the context of their own jobs. This suggests training tied to a worker's actual site could work better.
Why it matters
Worksite-specific augmented reality training could make construction and other high-risk workers more attentive to real hazards, which may help reduce serious injuries and deaths. The project also aims to produce occupational safety teaching materials for high schools, universities and industry.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
