Cutting carbon emissions from aircraft, power plants and factories will require new fuels that burn like today's fossil fuels. Ammonia (NH3) is rich in hydrogen and is safer to store and transport than hydrogen gas.

What they work on
- Measure flame propagation speed of ammonia–dimethyl ether blends across a wide range of temperatures, pressures, fuel-to-air ratios and Damköhler numbers using the RCM-FLAME apparatus.
- Determine experimentally how first-stage and second-stage autoignition affect flame speed in autoignition-assisted premixed laminar flames.
- Quantify how flame stretch affects outwardly propagating spherical autoignition-assisted flames, using optical diagnostic techniques.
- Evaluate how accurately chemical kinetic models simulate ammonia–DME combustion by comparing numerical simulations with experiments.
More about the research
However, it burns very differently from gasoline, diesel or jet fuel. One idea is to blend ammonia with dimethyl ether (DME), a highly reactive fuel made from biomass, so the mix behaves more like conventional fuels.
Why it matters
Low-carbon fuels such as ammonia blends could help reduce emissions from energy, transportation and industry. Better measurements of how these blends ignite and burn under engine-like conditions, together with checks of the chemical models used in simulations, could help engineers design combustion systems for sustainable fuels.
