Many blinding eye diseases damage the retina slowly before vision is lost. Measuring that early damage in numbers, rather than by eye, could improve diagnosis and treatment tracking.

What they work on
- Build a VIS-OCT platform combining 480 nm visible-light OCT, 840 nm near-infrared OCT and an autofluorescence detector. Use an A2E-stained reference target to obtain absolute fundus autofluorescence values.
- Test whether the RPE's own OCT signal, recorded at the same time as autofluorescence, can serve as an internal reference for measuring lipofuscin.
- Check the accuracy of autofluorescence measurements in model eyes and in albino and pigmented rats, comparing image signals with A2E levels measured by mass spectrometry.
- Test whether the color-dependent reflectance of the retinal nerve fiber layer marks damage from raised eye pressure, in rats and in early glaucoma patients compared with age-matched normal data.
- Image healthy people in six age groups and patients with early dry AMD and Stargardt's disease to establish normal values and assess clinical performance.
More about the research
Two examples are age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma. This project builds a retinal imaging platform based on visible-light optical coherence tomography (VIS-OCT). OCT makes cross-sectional pictures of the retina from reflected light, much as ultrasound does with sound.
Why it matters
Measuring retinal autofluorescence and nerve-layer damage in numbers could help eye doctors diagnose, stage and follow retinal degenerative diseases and glaucoma earlier. It could benefit patients with dry age-related macular degeneration, Stargardt's disease and glaucoma. It could also give clinical trials objective measures to judge whether new treatments work.
