What they work on

  1. Immerse U.S. high school, undergraduate and graduate students in field-based polar science at Kangerlussuaq and Summit Station, Greenland, through the Joint Science Education Project with Greenlandic, Danish and Indigenous partners.
  2. Offer a remote, data-focused Arctic short course for many U.S. high school students, and co-lead a virtual Arctic and Antarctic student research symposium with the Chilean Antarctic Institute.
  3. Evaluate how field-based versus virtual learning, Indigenous perspectives, near-peer mentoring and multicultural settings affect outcomes for students from groups historically excluded from STEM.

More about the research

polar scientists who can work across countries and cultures. This project is an education effort rather than a laboratory study. Dartmouth leads the U.S. part of two international programs that bring high school, undergraduate and graduate students into polar science, with a focus on students who have had limited access to STEM.

Why it matters

The project could expand the pool of U.S. students prepared for polar science and engineering careers, especially students from groups historically excluded from STEM. Its evaluation of field-based, virtual, mentoring and Indigenous-knowledge approaches could help future programs recruit and support diverse students. It also strengthens science partnerships with Greenland, Denmark and Chile.
