The Southern Ocean around Antarctica connects the deep ocean to the surface. It brings cold, carbon-rich water upward and carries heat and carbon dioxide absorbed at the surface down into the ocean interior.

What they work on

  1. Investigate how small, highly active Southern Ocean hotspots control the transport of heat and carbon between the surface and the deep ocean, using simulations with the Community Earth System Model.
  2. Implement online particle tracking in CESM so that virtual water parcels can be followed to reveal where water originates, how it travels, and how its physical and biogeochemical properties change along the way.
  3. Produce public datasets and a reusable particle-tracking tool, and use it as a step toward simulating autonomous biogeochemical profiling floats within the model.

More about the research

These exchanges help set how the global ocean stores heat and carbon, which affects Earth's climate. Recent research suggests that much of this exchange happens in small, highly active regions called hotspots. Scientists still know little about how these hotspots work or how they change over time.

Why it matters

How much heat and carbon dioxide the ocean takes up shapes how fast the climate warms. Better understanding of Southern Ocean hotspots could improve estimates of the global ocean's carbon and heat budgets. A public particle-tracking tool in CESM and open datasets will let researchers worldwide study ocean circulation and the marine carbon cycle.
