What they work on
- Quantify how care partner help with chronic kidney disease self-management relates over time to patients' self-management, depressive symptoms and health-related quality of life, through secondary analysis of existing data.
- Investigate how older patient–care partner dyads jointly appraise, manage and experience the health effects of chronic kidney disease across its progression, using interviews with both members of each pair.
- Adapt SHARE for CKD, a care-planning intervention that helps patients and family care partners manage the disease together, and test the feasibility of delivering it.
More about the research
Managing it day to day can mean tracking diet, medications and appointments. Older patients often rely on a family member, a "care partner," for help with this. Yet most research looks only at the patient's own self-management. It rarely asks how patient and care partner manage the disease together, or how that teamwork affects each person's health and well-being.
Why it matters
Older adults with chronic kidney disease and the family members who help them could benefit from care that supports both people rather than the patient alone. Findings could guide clinicians, researchers and health policies toward family-centered support, and a feasibility-tested SHARE for CKD program could become a practical planning tool for dyads if later trials confirm its effectiveness.
