Many maternal deaths in the United States are preventable. Clinical evidence, patient surveys and personal accounts point to poor interpersonal care and uneven treatment practices around pregnancy and birth as major contributors.

What they work on
- Determine whether a multifaceted patient-centered maternity care intervention improves hospital maternal outcomes and patient satisfaction, compared with remote self-paced training alone, in a cluster randomized trial across 9 Ochsner hospitals.
- Determine how an intervention promoting evidence-based maternity communication and care practices affects provider decision-making.
- Examine how hospital-level patient-centered maternity care affects patient and staff satisfaction, using routinely collected HCAHPS patient-experience survey data and staff measures.
More about the research
The long-term goal is to make patient-centered maternity care, care built around each patient's needs and voice, the standard from before conception through one year after birth. The aim is to reduce preventable maternal illness (morbidity) and death (mortality).
Why it matters
Reducing preventable maternal deaths is a national public health priority. If the multifaceted intervention improves outcomes, the findings could give hospitals a tested, scalable strategy for improving perinatal care. That could reduce preventable illness, disability and death among pregnant and postpartum patients and improve their experiences of care.
