School-based health centers (SBHCs) offer primary care, mental health care and other services in or near schools. They often serve young people who would otherwise struggle to see a doctor.

What they work on

  1. Survey a nationally representative sample of school-based health centers on staffing models and care delivery practices, and create a standard classification system for SBHC research and design.
  2. Use qualitative research to identify care coordination, screening, referral and school health system integration practices that help or hinder equitable care for youth facing disparities.
  3. Analyze national data on schools with and without school-based health centers to test whether SBHC access and specific service models are linked to smaller racial and ethnic gaps in graduation, absenteeism and discipline.

More about the research

Research shows these centers improve access to care, but little is known about which staffing setups and care practices work best. That gap matters as SBHCs expand and change quickly, and as attention to unequal access grows.

Why it matters

Schools, health departments and funders deciding how to set up or support school-based health centers have little evidence on which models work best. By identifying practices linked to smaller health and academic gaps, this work could guide SBHC policy, funding and program decisions and help these centers better serve historically marginalized youth.

Cameron Kaplan

University of Southern California, CA·Public Health & Epidemiology

Quantify how the COVID-19 pandemic changed racial and ethnic disparities in receipt of appropriate primary care, chronic disease management and downstream health outcomes, using longitudinal individual-level claims and billing data.

Pragya Kakani

Weill Medical College of Cornell University, NY·Public Health & Epidemiology·Early-career

Compare the neighborhoods, primary care providers and older adult patients of retailer-owned primary care clinics (such as those owned by CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and Amazon) with other practices to identify implications for access and quality.

Nina Bickell

Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NY·Public Health & Epidemiology

Use NYC-wide visit data on 12 million patients to describe how mixed or uniform outpatient practices are by insurance and other factors, and test links to quality measures in pediatric preventive care, obstetric procedures and chronic disease management.
