Fibroids are benign tumors of the uterine muscle wall and the most common neoplastic threat to women's health worldwide. They fall disproportionately on women of color and are a significant cause of infertility, since intramural and submucosal fibroids lower the chance of pregnancy.

What they work on
- Test whether oral EGCG, a catechin from green tea leaves, reduces uterine fibroid size compared with matched placebo in a randomized trial of 654 women seeking fertility care.
- Compare pregnancy and live birth outcomes between EGCG and placebo arms following a three-month run-in and up to four cycles of ovarian stimulation with intrauterine insemination.
- Operate the data coordinating center and a clinical recruitment site at Yale within the four-institution consortium assembled to reach enrollment targets.
More about the research
Surgical removal recurs often and can leave adhesions, internal scar tissue that itself impairs fertility, so there is a real need for treatments that are neither hormonal nor surgical and that are safe for women actively trying to conceive.
Why it matters
For women whose fibroids are the only abnormality found after full infertility evaluation, and for the many women of color disproportionately affected, a tolerable oral agent taken during fertility treatment would be an alternative to surgery with its recurrence and adhesion risks. If the trial shows benefit, EGCG could become a low-cost, fertility-compatible option for improving pregnancy and live birth rates.
