Dirty air indoors and outdoors can harm the lungs, and some groups bear more of that harm than others. Black children in low-income neighborhoods have higher rates of asthma and sleep disordered breathing (SDB), and people living with HIV face faster lung decline as they age.

What they work on
- Determine how bedroom air quality, allergens such as mouse allergen, and microbes such as Staphylococcus aureus relate to objectively measured sleep quality in low-income children with asthma in Baltimore City.
- Test whether bedroom environmental exposures are linked to upper-airway inflammation and oxidative stress, and whether poor sleep quality is associated with greater asthma morbidity in these children.
- Define how outdoor air pollution (PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide) and household air pollution affect lung function decline and respiratory illness in people living with HIV versus HIV-negative SHIELD cohort participants.
- Test whether HIV raises internal pollutant dose or exaggerates oxidative airway and body-wide responses, using albumin adductome mass spectrometry and examining markers of HIV control.
More about the research
The projects ask how pollution, allergens and microbes contribute to these unequal burdens, using careful home and personal exposure measurements alongside health outcomes.
Why it matters
These studies could show which pollutants in homes and outdoor air drive poor sleep, asthma attacks and lung decline. That evidence could guide home interventions to reduce sleep and asthma disparities among inner-city Black children, and could reveal modifiable risk factors and treatment targets for improving lung health and healthy aging in people living with HIV.
