Lithium-ion batteries power electric vehicles and portable electronics, and when they fail they can cause fires, costly recalls and lost public trust. Current inspection methods are slow, often require opening or touching the battery, and can miss hidden internal damage before it becomes dangerous.

What they work on
- Assess the market for scanning laser Doppler vibrometry as a non-contact battery health tool. This will be done through first-hand interviews with battery manufacturers, test laboratories, fleet operators and recycling processors.
- Evaluate how low-frequency vibration analysis, which tracks resonance and stiffness changes, can flag aging and degradation in lithium-ion cells and packs as a complement to capacity, voltage and impedance checks.
- Determine how high-frequency guided wave interrogation can locate hidden defects such as delamination, swelling and weld flaws, and how such scans would fit into existing battery testing workflows.
More about the research
A fast, no-contact way to check a battery's mechanical health could catch defects earlier.
Why it matters
Earlier, contact-free detection of damaged battery cells may improve electric vehicle safety and reduce costly recalls. It could also help recyclers and second-life users decide which packs are still sound, reducing premature disposal. Manufacturers and test labs could use the tool for faster quality and safety screening that works with their existing equipment.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
