PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), a daily pill that prevents HIV, works well when taken consistently. Yet only 35% of US men who have sex with men (MSM) who could benefit from PrEP have ever used it.

What they work on
- Evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of CHAMPION, which combines the PrEPAPP app with CBT4CBT computer-based cognitive behavioral therapy, among 100 HIV-negative meth-using MSM, measured by retention and engagement against a waitlist control.
- Test the preliminary efficacy of CHAMPION for improving PrEP adherence in a 6-month randomized controlled trial, using dried blood spot drug levels as an objective measure.
- Explore whether CHAMPION reduces meth use and sexual risk behavior compared with a usual-care waitlist control, using monthly behavioral assessments.
More about the research
Methamphetamine (meth) use makes the problem worse: up to a third of new HIV infections among MSM are linked to stimulant use. Smartphone-based programs have helped meth-using MSM who are living with HIV. Whether similar tools can help HIV-negative men stay on PrEP is not yet known.
Why it matters
Meth use is a persistent driver of new HIV infections among men who have sex with men, and few eligible men use PrEP. If the combined app and digital therapy package proves effective, it could give these men an accessible way to take PrEP more consistently, cut back on meth and reduce sexual risk, which could help lower HIV transmission.
