Modern software often runs in 'containers', self-contained packages that hold an application together with everything it needs to run. Platforms such as Kubernetes manage thousands of containers.

What they work on
- Develop the Cosimo co-simulation framework, coupling existing simulators with live orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes to model autoscaling, load balancing and failure recovery.
- Design a multi-objective optimization engine using hybrid, adaptive algorithms, including meta-learning and performance aggregation, to explore large orchestration configuration spaces efficiently.
- Validate Cosimo's accuracy and practical relevance through empirical benchmarking and comparison against real-world container orchestration systems.
More about the research
They decide when to add more copies, how to spread work among them and how to recover from failures. Tuning these platforms for best performance is hard. They have huge numbers of settings that affect each other in subtle ways, and testing them on real hardware is expensive.
Why it matters
Better-tuned container platforms could cut wasted computing resources and costs in both scientific and industrial cloud environments. An open-source, low-cost testing framework could let researchers and engineers improve reliability and scalability without building expensive physical testbeds.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
