Cholestatic liver diseases block the flow of bile, the digestive fluid made by the liver, and are a major cause of illness and death in infants and children. Because each of these diseases is rare, no single hospital sees enough patients to learn what causes them or how they progress.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through May 2029
What they work on
- Enroll infants, children and adolescents with biliary atresia and primary sclerosing cholangitis into ChiLDReN studies, and follow previously enrolled participants over time.
- Contribute biological specimens and accurate clinical data from Utah patients to the multicenter network's shared studies of childhood cholestatic liver disease.
- Support network genomics by processing and sharing genomic sequence data, ranking gene variants likely to contribute to liver disease for validation by network investigators.
More about the research
The Childhood Liver Disease Research Network (ChiLDReN) pools patients across many centers to answer those questions.
Why it matters
Children with rare liver diseases such as biliary atresia and primary sclerosing cholangitis have few treatment options. Pooling patients, specimens and genomic data across the network could reveal the causes and natural course of these diseases. That knowledge could improve diagnosis, management and therapies for affected children.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
