What they work on

  1. Identify differences in employment status among breast cancer survivors, including differences linked to education and income.
  2. Determine relationships between physical activity and work outcomes in breast cancer survivors, testing the roles of fatigue, cognition and access to exercise with structural equation modeling and mediation analysis.
  3. Use semi-structured interviews with breast cancer survivors to understand how physical activity relates to work life and to identify barriers, facilitators and desired features for a tailored intervention.

More about the research

A job is tied to quality of life, health insurance, sticking with treatment, recovery and financial security. Yet two common side effects of cancer and its treatment, fatigue and problems with thinking and memory, often get in the way of work. Physical activity can ease both, but survivors face barriers such as limited access to exercise opportunities, and their experiences differ by education and income. This career-development project examines how physical activity and employment are connected after breast cancer.

Why it matters

Breast cancer survivors who lose work face financial strain and worse health outcomes. Clarifying whether physical activity eases fatigue and cognitive problems that block employment could inform tailored exercise and work-life programs. These could especially help survivors with limited education or lower income stay employed and healthier.
