Computational skills, such as writing code to model and simulate physical systems, are now essential across science and engineering. Yet many undergraduate physics courses still teach little computation.

What they work on
- Establish regional faculty-development workshops, built on the PICUP community and sustained by local leaders, that help physics faculty add computational activities to undergraduate courses.
- Investigate how students learn computational physics across different course and institutional contexts, including two-year colleges and Minority Serving Institutions.
- Develop an assessment framework for student learning of computation in undergraduate physics, informed by research with instructors from two-year colleges and special-focus institutions.
More about the research
This project aims to help physics faculty across the country add computational activities to their courses, and to study how students learn computation in physics.
Why it matters
Physics students who learn to compute gain skills needed throughout science and engineering. By training faculty, especially at Minority Serving Institutions and two-year colleges, the project could bring computational physics to many more students. A research-based assessment framework could give instructors a way to measure whether students are actually learning computation.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
