Much of today's internet traffic does not need to arrive right away. Set-top boxes and phone apps prefetch content, smart devices upload data to the cloud, and data centers copy data between distant sites.

What they work on
- Measure how much delay, or slack, popular applications can tolerate, through user studies and application analysis at the intersection of networking and human-computer interaction.
- Design SAIN, a slack-aware internet, with a new application–network interface and storage abstractions that let senders and receivers communicate at different times.
- Develop slack-aware transport, routing and forwarding mechanisms, and evaluate them on video-on-demand, Internet of Things and geo-distributed replication applications.
More about the research
This project proposes that such traffic has slack: its packets, the small units of data sent over a network, can tolerate extra delays of seconds, minutes or even hours. If the network knew about this slack, it could cut costs and energy use and improve performance, availability and price for users.
Why it matters
Letting the internet delay traffic that is not urgent could reduce network costs and energy use for network and service providers. It could also improve performance, availability and price for users of video streaming, smart devices and cloud data replication.
