What they work on
- Build models linking the opioid epidemic and homelessness to the spread of HIV, hepatitis C and related infections among people experiencing homelessness.
- Estimate the health and economic impacts of housing provision, OUD treatment and medication-assisted treatment, alone and in combination, accounting for barriers and enablers to their use.
- Use economic analyses capturing broad societal costs and savings to identify which combinations of strategies most efficiently reduce infections and improve quality of life.
More about the research
The opioid epidemic is also driving the spread of HIV, hepatitis C (HCV) and related infections. At the same time, about 770,000 people experience homelessness on any given night, and many of them have opioid use disorder (OUD). This project uses computer models to ask which combinations of housing and drug treatment would best improve health for people experiencing homelessness who have OUD.
Why it matters
People experiencing homelessness who have opioid use disorder face high risk of overdose, HIV and hepatitis C. This modeling could show policymakers, clinicians and community groups which combinations of housing and treatment, such as medication-assisted treatment, may most efficiently reduce illness and death. It could also show what these strategies cost and save, especially in the communities hit hardest by homelessness and OUD.
