What they work on
- Compare platelet RNA-sequencing profiles from over 2,000 people with cardiovascular, immune-mediated, cancer and blood diseases to find shared and disease-specific molecular pathways.
- Apply identifiable deep generative models, non-negative matrix factorization and principal component analysis, methods that extract hidden patterns from large gene-expression datasets, to uncover cross-disease platelet signatures.
- Build a functionally annotated multi-disease platelet transcriptomic atlas that catalogs gene expression, isoforms and alternative splicing across conditions.
- Map allele-specific expression, differences in activity between the two inherited copies of a gene, in platelets from ancestrally diverse individuals to reveal conserved and disease-specific platelet functions.
More about the research
Little is known about which molecular programs inside platelets are shared across very different illnesses, such as heart disease, autoimmune conditions, cancer and blood cancers. Mapping those shared and disease-specific programs could point to common biomarkers (measurable signs of disease) and drug targets that work across conditions.
Why it matters
Many patients with heart disease, immune disorders, cancer and blood cancers such as myeloproliferative neoplasms could benefit if platelet gene-activity patterns yield shared biomarkers or drug targets. Because the dataset spans ancestrally diverse individuals, the atlas may support diagnostic and treatment strategies that work across diverse patient populations, advancing precision medicine.
