Infectious diseases remain a major cause of illness and death. Fighting them depends on carefully run human studies that test whether new vaccines and treatments are safe and work.

- Grants
- 1 known grant, through Nov 2026
What they work on
- Conduct phase 1–4 clinical trials of vaccines as a site within the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium, following Good Clinical Practice standards.
- Run human experimental infection studies with influenza and enteric viruses, in which volunteers are exposed under controlled conditions, alongside studies of patients with respiratory, gastrointestinal and sexually transmitted infections.
- Maintain infrastructure and a collaborator network that can expand quickly to evaluate vaccines and therapies for emerging pathogens of public health importance.
- Mentor junior investigators interested in vaccine and infectious disease clinical research.
More about the research
Clinical research of this kind at Baylor College of Medicine is organized as a Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU). The unit is one site in a national network called the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium. Its team of investigators, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and laboratory staff carries out trials and also helps decide which studies the network should run.
Why it matters
These trials test vaccines and treatments against respiratory, gastrointestinal and sexually transmitted infections and other pathogens of public health importance. Their results could improve understanding of these diseases and inform public health policy. The unit's ability to scale up quickly also lets new vaccines and therapies be evaluated during outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
