Viruses live throughout the human body, and together they form the virome. Little is known about how these viral communities change across a lifetime, or how the mouth, gut and brain may be linked through them.

What they work on
- Process and analyze virome sequencing data from the center's Biospecimen Analysis Core, using integrated bioinformatics pipelines that start primary processing as soon as data are generated.
- Integrate sequencing and spatio-temporal datasets with sample metadata to identify factors that shape viral community structure along the oral-gut-brain axis across the lifespan.
- Build a comprehensive virome database and share datasets through public repositories and the Human Virome Program, developing new analysis tools as needed.
More about the research
This work is part of a Human Virome Characterization Center for the oral-gut-brain axis. The center aims to build a detailed catalog of these viruses.
Why it matters
A shared, well-analyzed database of viruses in the mouth, gut and brain could help researchers understand how viral communities change across life and how they may influence health. This is mainly a resource-building effort. Publicly released datasets and tools could support many future studies of the human virome.
Known grants
From NIH and NSF research grants. Labs often have other funding we can't see.
